Bio | My first love is and will always be writing. For as long as I remember I wrote journal entries, short stories, poems (always with the poems). I often sang song lyrics in my head and made up jokes and quotes. I write longer works now, when I can, and I like reading and writing spiritual devotions and reflections. I also read widely both fiction and non-fiction. I pursued creative writing training both at polytechnic and university, but it wasn’t until I entered the real world of everyday life when I realised the discipline of writing is seriously hard!! The wonderful Adrienne Jansen, my first writing teacher, once explained to us hopeful writers that writing our stories should merely be a part of ‘everyday life,’ as if it weren’t this hugely important, dramatic act. For many years I didn’t align with this thinking. For the longest time, I actually thought writing was this frivolous and privileged act that didn’t provide any practical help to anyone. I have since adjusted my thinking about this as I realised the writing, itself, is about everyday life and it’s those everyday encounters and interactions that become the beauty and essence of the work, which in turn impacts the reader and moves them in some way. |
